Baby powder raise question about Cancer Risk.

Deane Berg thought she was going to die, and she wanted to know why. She was 49, way too young, she thought, to have advanced cancer in her ovaries. As she scrolled through websites that listed possible causes of ovarian cancer, one jumped out at her: talcum powder. She did not have risk factors like infertility or endometriosis, but she had dusted baby powder between her legs every day for 30 years. “I went into the bathroom, I grabbed my Johnson’s Baby Powder and threw it in the wastebasket,” recalled Ms. Berg, now 59, a physician assistant in Sioux Falls, S.D. “I said, ‘What else could it be?’” Ms. Berg was the first of thousands of women with ovarian cancer to file a lawsuit against the consumer products giant Johnson & Johnson, claiming that baby powder caused their disease and pointing to a long trail of studies linking talc to the cancer. The research dates to 1971, when scientists in Wales discovered particles of talc embedded in ovarian and cervical tumors. Deane Berg...

Call the Midwives..

Image
In the April 24 episode of the BBC series “Call the Midwife,” which just ended an especially strong fifth season on PBS, a nun (played by the wonderful Jenny Agutter) witnesses the birth of a severely deformed baby. Later, searching for the infant at the request of its anxious mother, the nun finds it abandoned, still breathing, in a hospital laundry room. Someone has placed the newborn in front of an opened window. Watching that scene, what snaps your head back is not the horror of its subject but the matter-of-factness of its execution. Like most of this show’s unfailingly humane explorations of life in a poor dockside neighborhood of London in the late 1950s and early ’60s, the mercy killing of a child suffering the appalling side effects of the morning-sickness drug thalidomide is handled with quiet compassion and without judgment. This generosity of spirit and unwillingness to condemn are the most endearing traits of “Call the Midwife,” based on...

He hails from Mkpat Enin Local Government in Akwa Ibom State but stays in Calabar with his family. People were shocked as he was said to be comfortable, living in his own house, owned three cars and all his eight children are allegedly doing well. Abasi Imoh a neighbor said, “We woke up in the morning to behold the body dangling on the mango tree outside the compound and we do not know what was responsible for his action.” We gathered that Captain William had allegedly sent a text message to one of his sons who lives in Port Harcourt, at about 10pm, to condole with him over his own death and advised him to be strong to take care of his siblings. But the son did not see the message until he got a call the next mornin...
